Blue Water Diving Club

Westbay Dive Weekend
7th-8th June 2008

The weather forecast was spot on for the first time in ages! The weekend was hot and sunny with light winds a perfect combination for an excellent dive trip. With half of the group staying in a caravan the rest in B&B time in-between days was relaxed. The weekend was spent on Ian Cornwell’s Huntress 2 a hard boat with lots of space and a lift to get back on the boat after the dive.
Day 1 saw us dive the Baygitano at 20 M a popular wreck for the club. The viz was down a little with the plankton bloom but the fish life was out in full. The wreck was like an aquarium with more fish than Captain Birds eye! Pollack, Wrasse, Bream, Bib as well as Lobsters and crabs were all over the wreck. The congers were also present as always on the well broken up wreck. The current was a little strong but that did not stop the fun.
The water temperature was a “barmy” 14 degrees which is not bad for this time of year.
The second dive of the day was on the Ram a reef at 12M with a slight drift. This was time to look for a few things for tea. Mark got a nice plaice and another buddy pair came up with a good sized crab. The days’ diving was all over by 3pm and it was time to head back to the caravan and a BBQ at David Johnson and family’s motor home! This was a good social evening and that family does not do things by half's we even had pancakes and clotted cream for pud.
Day 2 saw us joined by a couple of Dolphins (not the sea creatures but Kenny and Jennifer from the Aldershot Dolphins). We had a fantastic first dive on the St Dunston at 30M max. The wreck is huge with lots of life and comes up to 25M so is ideal for sports divers. The viz was very good 5 M plus. By the time we surfaced the sun was shinning brightly and we had a relaxing 2 hours surface interval before the sport began. The Saw tooth ledges at 20-25 M with a 1 knot drift were an excellent place for flatties, scallops and crabs. Between us we had around 5 dozen scallops for the pot. Not bad for a days hard work!
We were back at shore by just past 1 PM so a nice early finish.
All in all a great weekend was had by all
